License Model

Is Ocelot-Cloud open source?

No, Ocelot-Cloud is currently closed-source proprietary software. While open-sourcing the core would well align with our values, it is not yet feasible for business reasons. Currently, several factors prevent us from open sourcing:

  • Limited resources: With a small team, our work could be easily appropriated by competitors.
  • Product maturity: Most of the value currently resides in the freemium core. Before open sourcing it, we need a more mature and defensible premium edition.
  • Operational overhead: Maintaining an open source community requires resources we must currently dedicate to product development.

As the project grows, we will address these constraints and revisit this decision.

Parts of the codebase that are purely infrastructural are already released under an open source license and are available on GitHub.

User freedoms

Despite being proprietary for now, Ocelot-Cloud is meant to preserve essential freedoms:

  • Hosting control: Self-host Ocelot-Cloud on your own infrastructure or with any cloud provider of your choice, provided Ocelot-Cloud is not offered or monetized as a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) product.
  • Integration control: You decide how Ocelot-Cloud integrates with your environment, including backup storage, email servers, domains, and certificate management.
  • Data control: You can uninstall Ocelot-Cloud while retaining your data and running application containers. Ongoing operation then becomes your responsibility.
  • Privacy: Ocelot-Cloud does not collect usage data, track users, or display advertising. No account is required.
